Dr Simon Thomson is lead consultant in pain medicine and neuromodulation at Mid & South Essex University Hospitals NHS.
He was appointed consultant clinical lead in Pain Medicine and anaesthesia in 1992 at Basildon & Thurrock University Hospitals NHSFT, since 2019 called Mid & South Essex University Hospitals NHS.
Since 1993 he has been providing neuromodulation services and is active in clinical research, advocacy, training and publishing.
He founded the Neuromodulation Society of UK and Ireland in 2001 and served two three-year terms as President of International Neuromodulation Society from 2009 to 2015. He served on INS board in one capacity or another for 20 years, President for 6 of those years. He was chair /co-chair of the scientific and organizing committees of four biennial INS congresses in London 2011, Berlin 2013, Montreal 2015 and Edinburgh 2017. He instigated the INS website, doubled INS membership and started the INS research initiative.
Important ongoing leadership roles include appropriate SCS selection consensus, national neuromodulation registry, SCS waveform research, definitions of persistent spinal pain syndromes.
