I am a Systems Neurophysiologist with Biomedical and Neural Engineering experience, currently conducting research at Baylor College of Medicine and the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute (NRI) at Texas Children’s Hospital.
My research is driven by the increasing number of patients with autonomic disorders suffering from multi-organ failure, cardiovascular dysfunction and cognitive impairment. Recognizing the need for a deeper understanding of these complex mechanisms, some of my current research projects encompass:
i) The study of autonomic mechanisms underlying brain (cognition and memory) in epilepsy
ii) The therapeutic effect of deep brain stimulation on neuronal plasticity
iii) mechanisms and neuromodulation of sympathetic and parasympathetic activity in hypertension and obstructive sleep apnea.
The implementation of technologies in neural interfaces, wireless and telemetric decoding systems and computational pipelines has allowed me to advocate my research and has led me to the discovery of new brain-periphery pathways and neuromodulation therapies. I have also emphasized in education advocacy for minorities, and led national and international multi-disciplinary research. My leadership role as scholastic chair at the Gulf Coast Consortia at Texas Medical Center (GCC-TMC) underscores my commitment to advancing scientific initiatives across institutions, and at NANS I am looking to expand these initiatives.
