Dr. Dan Merrill has worked in academic, non-profit, and for-profit sectors of medical device development for 30+ years. Dan received his B.S. and M.Eng. in Electrical Engineering from Cornell. He then spent 11 years in industry before returning to academia. Dan earned his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve under J. Thomas Mortimer studying electrochemistry of charge injection at the electrode/tissue interface. He then performed a post-doc at the University of Utah studying the response of tissue to chronically implanted devices. His publications are standard training material among biomedical engineering departments. In 2005 Dan joined the Alfred Mann Foundation, serving as their Chief Scientist. In 2012 he returned to Salt Lake City, joining Ripple as their Chief Clinical Scientist. Dan is now a private consultant to the medical device industry, specializing in neural engineering. As a distraction, he was a volunteer firefighter/company officer/EMT with Snohomish County Fire District 7, Red Cross Disaster Services lead in Salt Lake City, and an amateur radio operator supplementing the Los Angeles County Sheriff.
