Chris Gilligan, MD, MBA is a pain medicine specialist and Chief Medical Officer, Chief Quality Officer, and Senior Vice President at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. He leads hospital-wide initiatives to enhance patient outcomes, satisfaction, and operational efficiency, focusing on quality, safety, teamwork, and professionalism. Dr. Gilligan has also collaborated with hospitals in the Middle East and China and has been a successful venture capital investor and board member for biotech and medical device startups, contributing to IPOs and acquisitions.
He began his career at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 1997 as a resident in General Surgery and Emergency Medicine, later completing a Pain Medicine fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Gilligan holds an MD from Yale, an M.Phil. from Cambridge, an MBA from Harvard, and a BA from Harvard.
Clinically active and internationally recognized, he specializes in minimally invasive spinal pain therapies and works closely with the FDA and healthcare payers. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of Pain Practice and Co-Editor of Bonica’s Management of Pain. Currently, he is Principal Investigator of the MODEL and SERENITY CM Phase 3 trials and Co-Principal Investigator of the RESTORE trial, while mentoring the next generation of clinicians and researchers.
