Sharena Rice is the Research Scientist and first employee after the founders at Sanmai Technologies PBC, which is developing a focused ultrasound neuromodulation medical device. She writes about developments of the broader field of neurotechnology medical devices as a Contributing Editor for Neurotech Reports. Dr. Rice earned her PhD in neuroscience from the University of Michigan, where she researched mice into virtual reality and real environments, contributed to circuit mapping experiments with optogenetics, and worked on the discovery and characterization of a new brain rhythm called “splines”.
Dr. Rice has advised the Foresight Institute on AI safety grants in neurotech, Valence AI, Nobody Studios, Graspify, and South by Southwest.
She is based in the San Francisco Bay and delighted to continuously come fuller-circuit through advancements and connections in neuromodulation.
